序言：荷兰足球的历史在70年代之前基本是跟清水一样清澈——因为没什么可深入说说的。兴起则要从米歇尔斯的Total Soccer说起。Total Soccer被译成全攻全守，并不精确，翻译成全方位足球相对来说更好一些。所以不要被字面上的东西迷惑了。Total Soccer讲求的是个体单干和整体协作，每个人都可能出现在球场上的任何位置，并很好的完成所处位置的任务。换而言之，就是阵型是死的，人是活的。每个球员在line-up中的位置只是表明其侧重点和专项性。Total Soccer要求很多：第一、扎实的技术基本功；第二、威猛的身体条件；第三、无间歇的穿插跑动；第四、高效的传接球速率；第五、熟练的整体配合。接下来，不才简单来说说Total Soccer理念下对不同位置的不同需求。
其实Total Soccer本质上来说，只有四个位置(除了门将)：两个中卫；两个中场；四个边翼；两个前锋。详见下图(嗯，糙了点，凑合看)：
中卫篇：多数情况下我橙的后卫们往往很彪悍的只有两个人，即上图中的3号和4号。当全队进攻的时候，3号和4号是立足于中圈弧的位置，利用造越位战术，既封堵对方组织进攻球员分球路线，又压缩对方箭头人物的活动范围。
这就要求这两个位置的球员要有较好的回追速度，上佳的防守技巧，强悍的身体素质以及准确的预判，与此同时，二人之间的呼应协防对于默契的要求程度也很高。科曼+里杰卡尔德与F·德波尔+Stam的组合基本可以完成这项任务。
此外，Total Soccer下的中卫还要分担一定的进攻任务，主要体现在接应边翼和中场球员的回球，调整进攻的方向，所以精准的长传球技术也是对其的要求。在定位球战术中，中卫并不是仅仅利用身体优势，作为桥头堡，有时更有责任对对方球门实施直接的打击：上述四人，以及30年前的阿里·汉，都有一脚很不错的直接任意球和远射功力。他们的任意球主要追求速度和角度，很少能踢出较大弧度的球。双中卫的情况下，速度属性较高的球员有点类似中后场自由人的角色，随时查缺补漏。
由于中卫在Total Soccer理念下承担的较多的后防任务，故此，对于球员身体素质的要求会略高于对技术技巧的要求。
