1981年的十大中文金曲，在原有十支单曲的基础上，增加了最佳作曲、最佳作词以及最高荣誉奖，前两者用来表彰歌曲的幕后人物，后者，则作为十大中文金曲之金针奖存于世。而这第一届金针奖，颁发给了顾嘉辉。顾嘉辉算是著作等身的音乐人，号称香港乐坛教父。他已经不是简单的与很多歌手合作，而是歌手以能唱顾嘉辉定做的歌曲为荣。当年最佳作曲是黄霑的《忘记他》，最佳作词是卢国沾的《找不着借口》。
当年的十大金曲虽然还是影视歌曲占了大头，但是离开了温拿的谭咏麟成功入围，并由此开创了他和张国荣的争霸时代。粤语歌曲逐步开始脱离影视剧载体，以独立的艺术形态，唱响香港。许冠杰、关正杰、罗文、甄妮、郑少秋这些以影视歌曲为主的歌手，尚在榜单中，林子祥、谭咏麟等就开始接手流行乐坛了。
81年的歌，虽然看上去传唱至今的不多，但是像《印象》、《旧梦不须记》都是港片里很喜欢用的配乐。郑少秋入围的《做人爱自由》，作曲上则借鉴了很多戏曲的元素，很大的丰富了粤语歌的创作来源。甄妮的《东方之珠》，跟罗大佑的并非同一首歌，罗大佑那一首角度更大一些，甄妮却显得心态更低。
